Michael Knights Appointed Acting Director of Institute's
Military and Security Studies Program
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(WASHINGTON) -- Dr. Michael Knights, a leading authority on key Middle Eastern theaters of conflict, will temporarily assume directorship of the Military and Security Studies Program during a brief leave of absence by program director Michael Eisenstadt.

An expert on the security affairs of Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and the Gulf Arab states, Dr. Knights -- a Washington Institute Lafer fellow -- first joined the organization in 2003. He has traveled extensively in Iraq and the Gulf states, published widely on security issues for major media outlets such as the Jane's Information Group, and lectures regularly at U.S. and British military institutions. As head of the Iraq Analysis and Assessments cell for the Olive Group, a private security provider, he directed information collection teams in Iraq. He has also supported Iraqi Provincial Reconstruction Teams and Human Terrain System teams from the outset of both programs.

Dr. Knights is the author, coauthor, or editor of many successful Washington Institute publications, including Provincial Politics in Iraq: Fragmentation or New Awakening? (2008), The Calm before the Storm: The British Experience in Southern Iraq (2007), Troubled Waters: Future U.S. Security Assistance in the Persian Gulf (2006), and Operation Iraqi Freedom and the New Iraq: Insights and Forecasts (2004). He is also the author of Cradle of Conflict: Iraq and the Birth of the Modern U.S. Military (U.S. Naval Institute Press, 2005). His forthcoming Washington Institute Policy Focus will examine strategic geography and factional control in the Kirkuk area of Iraq.

Although usually based in Boston, Dr. Knights will now spend extended periods in Washington fulfilling his responsibilities as acting program director. He is available for media inquiries and interviews.
