Muslims all over the world wait enthusiastically for the coming of Ramadan. Children get very excited because they expect special delicacies at Iftar throughout the month. Those keeping the fast, usually get courage and patience through Allah’s blessings. Unfortunately, there are always wrongdoers who exploit the situation by trying to make profits beyond normal proportions. This verse by a simple Bhopali poet says of them: “Farishtaun sey to hum akser miley hen; Hamain insan se koey miladey. (I have met many angels but still waiting to meet a good human being).

Two very nice books were sent to me as gifts on Eidul Fitr, which I would like to share here. The first is entitled Sacha and Khara Leader (An Upright and Bold Leader). It is about our benefactor and founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, written by well-known, knowledgeable and intellectual writer and journalist, Mr. Zia Shahid. It has been published by Qalam Foundation International, Lahore. Mr. Zia, besides being an experienced writer and journalist, is also President of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors, Chief Editor of daily Khabrain, Naya Akhbar, Khabron (Sindhi) and Khabra’n (Punjabi). Before that he was Founder Editor of the daily Pakistan, Deputy Editor of Nawae Waqt, Lahore and Resident Editor of Nawae Waqt, Karachi. Even earlier he was Deputy Editor of Urdu Digest, Editor, Printer, Publisher of Weekly Sahafat and more. He was also jailed during the time of Mr. Bhutto. He has been decorated with Sitara-e-Imriaz by the President and has received a Life-time Achievement Award from the Prime Minister of Pakistan. His love, affection and admiration for Pakistan and Quaid-e-Azam is evident from his numerous publications, seminars and TV shows. He was instrumental in have objectionable portions removed from the film Jinnah by Akbar S. Ahmad.
The book in question is a treasure of information on all aspects of life of Quaid-e-Azam, starting from his birth, parents, school days, education in England, marriage to Ratan Bai, excellence in profession, fame for integrity and honesty, being regarded by all (even his opponents) as being unpurchasable, leadership qualities, working as an ambassador for Muslim-Hindu unity, parting of ways with Congress for their selfish policies, joining All India Muslim League, becoming its President, disappointment with the attitudes of his colleagues, his departure for England, his return after many years at the request of Allama Iqbal, his public speeches, addresses in functions, negotiations with the British and Hindus, again disappointment with the policies and attitudes of some of his colleagues, the Pakistan Resolution, Lahore, the creation of Pakistan, his oath taking as Governor General of Pakistan, speech in the Constitutional Assembly laying down the future policies and philosophies of a Welfare Islamic State with full protection of minorities, his illness and sad demise under tragic circumstances in a broken ambulance on Mauripur Road, full of flies and smelling terribly of still, brackish waters. Unfortunately, his sad demise was the beginning of the deterioration of Pakistan. This book is like an encyclopedia on Quaid-e-Azam and his life and is a must read for all students of Pakistan Studies and Quaid-e-Azam studies. Mr. Zia Shahid is a staunch lover of Pakistan and of Quaid-e-Azam, as too is my friend, Dr. Safdar Mahmood, and both have written much on the topic.

The second invaluable book is on the life of our beloved Holy Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH). It is written by a mujahid of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, Group Captain (R) Abdul Waheed Khan. The book starts with the ancestors of the Prophet (PBUH), his birth, upbringing, forecasts (of his coming) in other divine books and in the books of the Hindus and Parsis, the history of the period of ignorance in pre-Islamic days, his marriage to Hazrat Khadija (RA), his Prophethood, the embracing of Islam by Hazrat Hamza (RA) and Hazrat Umar (RA), marriages with Hazrat Sodah (RA) and Hazrat Ayesha (RA), the conditions reigning in Madinah, the change of Qibla from Baitul Magdas to Makkah, the wars of Badar, Ahad, Khandaq, etc., the conspiracies of the Jews, all the expeditions and messages to rulers to accept Islam, the last sermon at Arafat, the disclosure of Surah Al-Maida at Arafat, his indisposition, sad demise, the appointment of Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA) as the first Caliph, affairs during his Khalifat, the divine message regarding death and details of day-to-day life and character, etc. In short, this book is more or less and encyclopedia on the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Group Captain (R) Waheed Khan had this book published himself and it is currently in its 7th edition. All books written by him can be obtained from him by calling 021-35894886. In addition to this book, Group Captain (R) Waheed Khan has also published Quranic information in English and Urdu and an English translation of the book entitled The Personality of Allah’s Last Messenger, Muhammad (PBUH). May Allah shower His infinite blessings on Group Caprtain Abdul Waheed Khan and his family – Ameen.

P.S. National elections are around the corner. Let us hope and pray that some honest, upright politicians are elected to repair the damaged reputation of this country.
