Recently I was invited to be Chief Guest at the 5th Convocation of Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad which was being held at the Jinnah Convention Centre. I have great respect and admiration for the work that Shifa Hospital and Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University are doing in the field of health care. Dr. Zaheer, founder of the organization, had a vision which he wished to see fulfilled. He conceived and initiated the programme. Unfortunately, he expired quite suddenly without seeing his vision coming to full fruition. Thus it came about that when Prof.Dr. Manzoorul Haq Qazi, CEO of Shifa International and Chancellor of the University, Prof.Dr. M. Iqbal Khan, Vice Chancellor of the University and my one-time colleague, Col.Dr. M. Naeem came to personally invite me to the Convocation, I considered it to be a personal honour and gladly accepted.

Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University (STMU) is a Federally Chartered, non-profit institution committed to philanthropic activities in the critical areas of specialized health care, contemporary education and a wide range of academic as well as professional disciplines. The Teaching Hospital – Shifa International – is a Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facility. JCI identifies, measures and shares best practices in quality and patient safety with the world. Shifa International is a multi-disciplinary teriary care facility providing high quality care at an affordable price. This Teaching Hospital is, in fact, the only facility in Pakistan offering multi-organ transplants, including liver transplant.

The Shifa Flahee Clinic, located in the Shifa International Hospital Complex, provides free medical care and medicines to about 500 poor patients on a daily basis. By this means, deserving patients get the indoor and outpatient health care they deserve, which is provided by senior consultants at par with private patient care.

The Tameer-e-Millat Foundation has successfully been administering and maintaining a network of more than 400 schools all over Pakistan since 1987. Their areas of concentration are the under-privileged areas of the country like Thar desert, south and central Punjab, Northern Areas and Baluchistan, where they are helping the deserving segment of society through empowering their future generation with knowledge.

Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University and its emerging constituent units – presently Shifa College of Medicine, Shifa College of Nursing, National College of Business and Management Sciences, Shifa College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Allied Health Sciences, Shifa College of Medical Technology, Shifa School of Health Professions Education and the Department of Clinical Psychology – meet national and international standards. The exceptional student to teacher ration – i.e. 6:1 – makes it stand out among all national and many international higher seats of learning. The alumni of the University are making good names for themselves in world-class institutions across the globe.

Upon entering the Convention Centre I was pleasantly surprised by the standing ovation I received from the students. It made me once again realize that no money on earth can give the satisfaction of recognition and respect from ordinary citizens of the country. My dear, respected friend and Chairman HEC, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, was there as the Guest of Honour. I made use of the opportunity to voice my honour at being Chief Guest by the following short speech:
“Prof.Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairperson, Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Dr. Manzoor-ul-Haq Qazi, Chancellor, Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Prof.Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Khan, Vice Chancellor, Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Deans of Faculties, Faculty members, graduating students, parents, distinquished guests, ladies and gentlemen, Assalam-o-Alaikum.
I am grateful to Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University for inviting me to this prestigious event and for giving me the opportunity to address the fresh graduates. First of all I cordially congratulate all the students on this important step in their future success. It must give you great cause of satisfaction as it is the outcome of hard work and dedication. Now comes the time to serve your country with full responsibility and professional skill. The ceremony of the distribution of certificates is the first formal step to planning your future life. I am sure you will all have made some plans for your future professional life and many of you will heave a sigh of relief and thankfulness at the completion of this important phase.
Last but not least, congratulations also to the parents and teachers who have all played a vital role in your present accomplishment.
I was pleased to learn that all the programs offered by Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University are accredited by the respective professional councils and recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. The University has not only been very successful so far, but is continuously striving for quality education through the implementation of improved standards.
Finally, I request all the students to abide by the oath they take today. We all vow to struggle to turn this country into a welfare Islamic state where everyone is allowed to spend their lives based on social justice and where everyone can live in peace, harmony and honour. May Almighty Allah shower His blessings on all of you – Ameen.
Pakistan Zindabad.”
